Wärtsilä Corporation says it has been given the go-ahead from Manga LNG Oy to begin construction of a liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal in northern Finland.

The facility, located in the Port of Tornio, will be the first import terminal that the company has ever supplied, and includes all unloading, storing and regasification equipment, along with a 10-year maintenance agreement, said Wärtsilä.

"The world is switching to natural gas, and we make it available in new places, said Tore Björkman, vice president of LNG and nuclear at Wärtsilä Power Plants.

"With our unique turnkey offering, we are ready take a leading role in end-to-end LNG systems."

The facility is expected to have a storage capacity of 50 000 cubic metres, with the company having signed a turnkey contract to supply the terminal earlier this year.

Manga LNG Oy is a joint venture between Outokumpu Group, Svenskt Stål AB (SSAB), Skangass, and EPV Energy Ltd, and was formed last year for the purpose of building the terminal.

Wärtsilä first announced the project back in January, which is estimated to be worth €100 million.
