MTF Issues Safety Guidance for Wind-Assisted Ships
The Maritime Technologies Forum (MTF) has published guidelines to help companies develop safety management systems for wind-assisted ships.
The guidance sets out a structured approach to managing operational, technical and organisational challenges linked to wind-assisted propulsion systems, including rotor sails, suction sails and wing sails, it said in an email statement on Tuesday.
It aims to help identify procedural gaps and strengthen SMS frameworks for both newbuild and retrofitted vessels.
Developed by MTF members with experience in WAPS and the International Safety Management Code, the report highlights the need for formal risk assessments and addresses impacts on manoeuvrability, visibility, emergency preparedness and maintenance.
It also encourages companies to capture WAPS-specific incidents and near-misses, and calls for role-specific crew training in the absence of dedicated certification.
MTF is a forum of flag states and classification societies.
