Technology company Alfa Laval says "one of the leading global carriers" has ordered its waste fuel recovery systems for 40 vessels, a SEK 40 million ($6.1 million) deal.

The Alfa Laval PureDry system recovers reusable fuel from vessels' waste fuel oil using a combined technology including a high-speed centrifugal separator.

"This is indeed a very significant order for our unique Alfa Laval PureDry system that is reaching wide acceptance among shipowners," said President and CEO Lars Renström.

"The order confirms a clear confidence in this energy-saving product."

Alfa Laval says that a large ship that burns 100 metric tonnes (mt) of oil per day could save SEK 3 million ($460,000) in a year by using the PureDry system.

Baltic ferry operator AS Tallink Grupp (Tallink) installed one of the PureDry units last year, cutting fuel costs by up to 2 percent and reducing waste disposal fees.
