Finland-based Meriaura Group (Meriaura) has taken delivery of M/S Eeva VG from Dutch shipbuilder Royal Bodewes, the first of two dual-fuel biofuel-MGO "VG EcoCoaster" general cargo vessels, World Maritime News reports.

As Ship & Bunker has previously reported, the new vessels are central to a programme of fleet renewal for the company, featuring advanced hull design and optimised machinery to achieve the bunker savings.

"Although the vessels are traditional dry cargo bulkers, they represent a new generation because of their environmental friendliness and energy efficiency," said Jussi Mälkiä, Chairman of Meriaura.

The new vessel's hull and machinery are said to be optimised to the speed of 10.5 knots in open water conditions, while further power required for under Ice Class 1A requirements is provided by a diesel electric-driven booster unit.

The 5,000 tonne vessel is said to have been christened at the Finnish port of Rauma on October 5, and has since been loaded with its first cargo, 4,000 tonnes of oats, in Rotterdam.

Eeva VG's sister ship, the Mirva VG, is said to be slated for delivery by the end of November.

In June, Ship & Bunker reported that Christian Poensgen, senior vice president engineering at MAN Diesel & Turbo SE (MAN) said low bunker prices mean that energy efficiency improvements on marine engines need to be delivered at "twice the value for the same price."
