Japanese classification society ClassNK says it has introduced progressive speed trial analysis software (PSTA) to help shipyards comply with Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) calculation requirements.

The Amendment to MARPOL Annex VI requires EEDI calculation and regulation values for vessels contracted from January 1, 2013 onward.

The software allows adjustment for external factors such as wind, waves, tides, shallow waters, and displacement during speed trials to help provide better accuracy.

ClassNK is providing the software, called PrimeShip-GREEN/PSTA, to shipyards at no charge.

The International Maritime Organisation (IMO) has said the EEDI, which estimates carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions per tonne-mile of goods transported, should stimulate innovation and technical improvements, but European Union (EU) officials have said the regulation is not enough to control emissions.
