Singledecker Bulkers: The Most Scrapped Vessel in 2013
Singledecker bulkers, (i.e. general cargo and multi- purpose bulkers) topped the list of the ten vessel types to be sold for scrap in 2013, according to data from fleet valuation service VesselsValue.com, which tracks the value of some 25,000 ocean going vessels.
257 of the vessels, a huge 28 percent of the entire Singledecker Bulker fleet, were sold for demolition last year. That there was very little upward movement in spot rates in this segment is testament to the extreme over-capacity in this segment.
In terms of number of vessels sold, Handysizes followed close behind with 187 demolition sales last year, although this represented a much smaller percentage of the overall Handy fleet at just over 7 percent.
Small Tankers were the most common class of tanker to be sold for scrap last year with 97, about 2 percent of all such vessels, leaving the fleet.
For box ships, Panamaxes were the most often scrapped container carrier in 2013 with demolition sales for 68 vessels, or 4 percent of the Panamax fleet.
