MSC Cruises and ARTA has announced their partnership to develop a liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunkering system for MSC Cruises' ships, aiming to "set a new standard in LNG bunkering for cruise ships" in the process.

Through their cooperation, the companies say they have developed a resistant double-walled corrugated stainless steel hose intended for transferring LNG to a cruise ship from a bunkering vessel or shore facility.

"We are exceptionally glad of the new system that we have developed to suit the cruise industry's specific bunkering needs," said Andreas von Keitz, ARTA's Managing Director.

"The result is a technologically advanced solution that will help ensure that the double wall principle is maintained across the entire LNG bunkering supply chain."

The companies say that the standard to be developed through the cooperation will meet the "unique" future requirements of the industry, noting that cruise ships need systems that allow for bunkering operations with minimal disruption to guests and crew.

"With up to four LNG-powered cruise ships scheduled to join our fleet, we are highly committed to developing the best possible technologies and systems to support the introduction of LNG to cruising," said Yves Bui, MSC Cruises' LNG Project Director.

"In ARTA, we have found a partner that matches our focus on innovation and the best maritime technology at sea and that understands our industry's specific needs. The result is a system that features a newly developed coupling and decoupling mechanism as well as a double-walled hose that will allow us to conduct bunkering operations without disrupting the activities taking place on board the ship."

As Ship & Bunker previously reported, MSC Cruises Wednesday announced it had signed a letter of intent (LOI) with STX France for the construction of up to four LNG-powered cruise ships, set to be delivered in 2022, 2024, 2025, and in 2026.
