General Dynamics NASSCO Thursday announced it has signed a deal with Braemar LNG BV (Braemar) to allow Braemar to use its patents in the design and construction of LNG marine fuel tanks.

Braemar will use the technology to build new Flat-Panel, Semi-Membrane, Prismatic-Shaped (FSP) LNG containment systems.

"We are very excited about licensing this innovative LNG containment technology to Braemar," said Kevin Graney, VP and General Manager of General Dynamics NASSCO.

"FSP can be used in multiple LNG applications, including transportation, marine fuel tanks, bunker barges and floating offshore applications."

The FSP systems are designed to be built and tested on land and lifted whole into newbuild ships while under construction.

"This off-hull fabrication leads to a significant reduction in vessel construction time and improves the accuracy, reliability and tank-to-tank construction learning," said General Dynamics NASSCO.

The FSP design has received approval from both Lloyds Register (LR) and the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS).

ABS Monday announced it is introducing a "LNG Fuel Ready" notation for shipowners wishing to ensure that newbuilds will be capable of conversion to LNG bunkers in the future.
