Classification society, American Bureau of Shipping (ABS), Monday announced the release of its Guide for LNG Fuel Ready Vessels.

ABS also said it will introduce a new notation for Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG)-ready vessels.

The move is said to be a response to growing demand from customers for the review and approval of machinery elements on vessels designed for conversion to LNG fuel.

"The Guide formalizes the process for clients who wish to plan for conversion to LNG fuel at a future date by providing a detailed review and approval and an associated class notation," said ABS.

The guide is said to explain three optional levels of input from ABS, ranging from basic Concept Design Approval, through detailed design review and survey of particular equipment, to achieving ABS's new LNG Fuel Ready notation for installed equipment.

"The ABS Guide and notation are powerful tools that go beyond the basics to help clients specify work to be done in the construction phase and when they are ready to convert," said Patrick Janssens, ABS's Vice President of Global Gas Solutions.

"ABS is a leader in LNG as fuel, with a number of newbuilding and conversion projects in progress, and there is strong interest in preparing for a future in which LNG takes a bigger role," added ABS Chairman and CEO Christopher Wiernicki.

ABS was earlier this year reported to be classifying "first of a kind" LNG bunker barges for U.S. company LNG America.
