Market Will Adapt in its Own Way to End of "Legacy" Yahoo Messenger: Zederkof

The International Bunker Industry Association (IBIA) says the market will adapt to find new forms of communication once the "Legacy" Yahoo messenger system stops working on August 5, but cannot advise on what the most suitable replacement will be.

"Of course it would be easier if everyone uses the same communication platform," writes IBIA's Unni Einemo, "but IBIA cannot advise the bunkering community on what to choose, any more than we can tell the market whether to choose an iPhone or an Android phone."

Einemo notes that most bunker traders already use a variety of other tools besides Yahoo, and as such believes there will likely be a period when the bunkering community uses a range of alternatives.

"It could take a while before a preferred option emerges," she says.

Still, IBIA remains confident that the industry will find a way forward.

"I think the market will adapt in its own way regarding communication," says Henrik Zederkof, IBIA board member and CEO of Dan-Bunkering.

"When telex left the scene, we all managed to find new ways."

A poll by Ship & Bunker shows WhatsApp and Skype as the leading choices to replace Yahoo, but it's not yet clear if such solutions will meet compliance requirements.
