Thun Tankers Friday announced that it has ordered four new fuel efficient, next generation, "sustainable" chemical tankers through Erik Thun AB (Erik Thun).

Thun Tankers says the newbuilds will be built to accommodate the retrofit of liquefied natural gas (LNG)-propulsion in the future.

"This series of new tankers will continue to provide our clients with the dynamics of always having climate smart high quality tankers in the right position at the requested time," said Joakim Lund, CCO for Thun.

The vessels will be built by Netherlands-based Scheepswerf Ferus Smit B.V. (Ferus Smit), which is noted to have a longstanding relationship with Erik Thun.

"We always strive to meet our customers’ various demands with sustainable solutions. With this order we intend to further extend that offer by building a series of identical sister ships where some uses LNG as a fuel and others don't," said Johan Källsson, Deputy Managing Director of Erik Thun.

Thun Tankers says it intends to offer sister ships on which LNG propulsion can be offered, depending on the client's request.

"We in Erik Thun have always had a high focus on resource efficiency that translates into modern environmental care. We are convinced that these vessels will contribute to provide the best logistical and most environmental friendly transport solution to our customers," said Anders Källsson, CEO of Erik Thun.

In June, Ship & Bunker reported that Ferus Smit had delivered the second of two cement tankers, MV Ireland, a dual fuel LNG-MGO vessel - part of a joint venture between Erik Thun and KG Jebsen Cement, and noted to be one of the first such vessels in the world.
