Alphaliner in its latest weekly report suggests that box carriers orphaned following a shake up of existing alliances could combine to form a new "third force" alliance to rival 2M and the newly-agreed Ocean Alliance.

"The eight carriers could team up under a single arrangement that would represent a serious counterweight to the 2M and Ocean Alliance on the East-West corridors," said Alphaliner, who said there were "ongoing discussions" but nothing yet was agreed.

The remaining members of the CKYHE, G6, and Ocean 3 alliances that could be part of the new alliance are Hapag-Lloyd AG (Hapag-Lloyd), Hyundai Merchant Marine (HMM), Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL), Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK), Hanjin Shipping Co Ltd (Hanjin), Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha, Ltd. (K Line), Yang Ming Marine Transport Corporation (Yang Ming), and United Arab Shipping Company (UASC).

Hamburg Sϋd - currently partners with UASC and CMA CGM - could also be brought into the mix.

The latest consolidated data from Alphaliner suggests the group of nine would control 24.7 percent of the world's container capacity, against 2M's 27.9 percent share and Ocean Alliance's 23.3 percent.

Current alliances will maintain in effect until April 2017.

As Ship & Bunker reported in April, Hapag-Lloyd is also in talks with UASC that could include a merger of operations.
