Wärtsilä Corp. (Wärtsilä) says it has received orders for scrubber systems bound for newbuild and retrofit ships being built by Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI).

"The acceptance of exhaust gas cleaning systems as a means of achieving compliance with environmental regulations is rapidly increasing," said Jae-Su Kim, technical manager of Initial Design Department for HHI's Shipbuilding Division.

"Wärtsilä is not only the leading supplier of such equipment, but is also able to provide all the technical and installation support needed."

Norway-based Solvang ASA exercised an option for Wärtsilä Open Loop Scrubber Systems to be installed on a new large gas carrier (LGC), following similar orders for two other LGCs and two very large gas carriers (VLGCs).

In addition to the new vessels being built by HHI, Solvang also ordered the open loop systems as a retrofit for a liquefied petroleum gas tanker.

Four orders for Wärtsilä Hybrid Scrubber Systems came from Wilhelmesen Lines Shipowning Malta (WLSM) for four new Post-Panamax car carriers being built by HHI subsidiary Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries (HSHI) in South Korea.

Dorian-LPG Ltd. of Greece will also use the firm's open loop systems for a new VLGC being built by HHI.

A recent analysis by Maritime Watch argued that scrubber sales have captured only a small fraction of the shipping industry due in part to questions about the technology's effectiveness.
