Sirius Shipping AB (Sirius Shipping) has announced that it has placed an order with AVIC Dingheng Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. (Avic Dingheng) for two fuel efficient, liquefied natural gas (LNG)-ready tankers.

The 7,999 DWT design, which was developed by FKAB and Sirius under the name "EVOlution," is said to feature proven hull lines to reduce fuel consumption, and making it "one of the most efficient vessel in its segment."

To reduce exhaust gas levels for NOx to below Tier III-levels, the vessel design is also said to feature exhaust gas scrubbers, including a High Pressure Selective Catalytic Reduction (HP SCR) for the main engine, and a catamiser for the auxiliary engines.

"The development of the EVOlution series begun in 2012 with focus on fuel economy. With the knowledge built up in Sirius since then, we are now confident and ready to order two units," said Jonas Backman, Managing Director of Sirius Shipping.

In July, DNV GL announced that it had submitted a report to the European Union (EU) that offered guidance on how to address barriers challenging the widespread adoption of LNG as marine fuel, noting there are no longer any "major showstoppers" remaining.
