MAN Buys Alfa Laval Scrubbers for Cruise Ships
Sweden's Alfa Laval says MAN Diesel & Turbo (MAN) has ordered four of its PureSOx scrubber systems for two cruise ships, representing a value of about SEK 55 million ($8.3 million)
"This order proves the technical acceptance among the largest players in the marine industry for our Alfa Laval PureSOx system", said Alfa Laval President and CEO Lars Renström.
The systems will be delivered in 2013 and 2014, and Alfa Laval saif they will remove more than 98 percent of sulfur oxides from the ships' exhaust gas, allowing them to continue using heavy fuel oil while still reducing sulfur emissions.
Alfa Laval said it received its first order for the PureSOx systems in December 2012.
As deadlines for new emissions rules approach, there has been debate in the shipping community over the cost of compliance.
David Bull, a senior consultant at Royal Haskoning Ocean Shipping Consultants, said earlier this year that liquefied natural gas (LNG) fuel systems may be less attractive to cash-strapped ship owners since scrubbers cost only a third as much as a conversion to LNG.
