Alfa Laval Monday announced that the company's PureNOx has been approved for use with the MAN Diesel & Turbo SE (MAN) EGR system.

The PureNOx is intended to prevent soot and compounds derived from exhaust gas from accumulating in the EGR scrubber and corroding the engine, as well as enable the bleed-off of clean water overboard in compliance with International Maritime Organization (IMO) criteria.

Alfa Laval reportedly signed a cooperation agreement with MAN in 2012 to develop the water treatment system for cleaning scrubber water in their EGR system.

"A comprehensive NOx abatement technology, the EGR will be used with the MAN's two-stroke marine engines to reduce NOx emissions," said Alfa Laval.

"The EGR, an alternative to selective catalytic reduction (SCR) technology, is compliant with the IMO NOx Technical Code."

Alfa Laval is said to be the first company in the world to be approved by MAN to supply a water treatment system, PureNOx, for MAN's exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) scrubber.

"From the start, we have worked closely with MAN to develop and refine the water treatment system," says Kristina Effler, Global Business Manager, Water Treatment Exhaust Gas Emissions for Alfa Laval.

"Receiving the MAN Certificate of Approval for PureNOx is proof positive that close cooperation really pays off."

The EGR system itself is integrated with the engine and the PureNOx's is said to have a compact modular design that is easy to install and can be positioned anywhere in the engine room.

Alfa Laval says it is keeping pace with MAN's movements towards EGR system commercialisation by introducing the next-generation PureNOx Prime water treatment system, which is intended to minimize the amount of sludge for onshore disposal.

"By yearend, we will launch the PureNOx Prime, which is smaller and less complex than the original, but also far less expensive," said Effler.

In May, Alfa Laval announced that it has patented its scrubber wash water cleaning technology, which is featured in the company's PureSOx marine scrubber system.
