Alfa Laval Wednesday announced that it has patented its scrubber wash water cleaning technology, which is featured in the company's PureSOx marine scrubber system.

The PureSOx H2O water cleaning unit utilizes a high-speed centrifugal separator to remove soot from the scrubber's circulation water when it is operating in closed-loop mode, something the firm says is of the "utmost importance" for compliance when operating in areas such as Belgium and Germany where ports do not allow open loop scrubbers.

"The unit is completely unaffected by pitch and roll, which sets it apart from other cleaning systems on the market," said Alfa Laval.

The unit has a footprint of 6 m2 and a modular construction based on three flexibly placed skids.

Last week, Lloyd's Register (LR)'s Nick Brown argued that the case for scrubbers is not yet strong enough to see adoption by large parts of the global shipping fleet.
