General Dynamics NASSCO says itsĀ 50,000 DWT newbuild liquefied natural gas (LNG) conversion-ready product tanker, "symbolises the emerging direction of the U.S. shipping industry toward cleaner, more fuel-efficient modes of transporting product between American ports."

The Independence, which was delivered to SEA-Vista LLC (SEA-Vista) on Thursday, is said to be the first of three such tankers ordered by the company.

General Dynamics NASSCO says the ship was designed by DSEC Co., LTD. (DSEC), a subsidiary of Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co., Ltd (DSME), and features a number of improved fuel efficiency concepts, including an optimised hull form and a G-series MAN Diesel & Turbo ME slow-speed main engine.

The Jones Act vessel is also said to feature a Ballast Water Treatment System.

In November, the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) said that the International Maritime Organization's (IMO's) Ballast Water Management (BWM) Convention will do nothing to solve "extreme difficulties" that remain in the U.S. around water treatment equipment.
