AkzoNobel Tuesday announced that its marine coatings business is now fully compliant with the new standard for measuring hull and propeller performance, ISO 19030, and has incorporated the requirements of the standard into its hull and propeller efficiency recommendations.

"The ISO 19030 standard consolidates the latest academic and industry knowledge and understanding into an agreed and standardised method to measure the performance of a vessel through the water," explained the company.

Through the incorporation of the standard, AkzoNobel says it can now use a monitoring process that is ISO 19030 compliant to verify Intertrac Vision, its big data tool, against actual performance.

The development will facilitate datasets to be compared through a transparent process, and will help reduce disputes over vessel performance, notes the company.

"Intertrac Vision is a system that is easily adaptable, scalable and has the capabilities to react to market changes, and it can incorporate more functionality as required to suit the needs of our business and customers," said Michael Hindmarsh, Project Lead for Intertac Vision at AkzoNobel's marine coatings business.

"The adoption of ISO 19030 into Intertrac Vision to measure hull performance is an important example of this, and demonstrates AkzoNobel's ongoing commitment to delivering transparency and choice in hull coating selection and performance."

In the context of a difficult shipping market, AkzoNobel says it would like to see ISO 19030 made relevant to as many ship owners and operators as possible, with the company's own compliance with the standard viewed as a step toward this.

ISO 19030, which was developed with the help of AkzoNobel, is slated to be finalised this year, a milestone that the company says will "mark a solid, initial 'line in the sand' in relation to monitoring hull and propeller performance."

In April, AkzoNobel announced the launch of a new bunker-saving antifouling biocide, Intercept 8500 LPP, that the company said would "revolutionize" the biocidal coatings market.
