Stena Line's Holyhead-Dublin ferry, Stena Nordica, Sunday collided with a bunker barge, though no reports of a bunker spill have emerged, local media reports.

The ferry is understood to have sustained damage after being hit by the smaller bunker barge, and sailings were cancelled.

The local Marine Accident and Investigation Branch (MAIB) confirmed that the bunker barge, Keewhit, struck the ferry while it was at berth in Holyhead Harbour, UK.

The MAIB said it was gathering information to decide whether an investigation will be necessary.

"There were no injuries to crew or passengers but there was damage caused to the Stena Nordica," said a Stena Line spokesperson.

"The Stena Nordica was taken out of service so repairs could be completed and she will hopefully be back in service on Thursday.

"This has unfortunately caused delays and Stena Line would like to apologise to passengers for any inconvenience caused."

Last month, Stena Germanica was said to be due to become the first of Stena Line's fleet to be converted to use methanol bunkers in a move that could see 40 ferries converted to the alternative bunker fuel.
