India’s shipping ministry has detailed ongoing efforts to develop alternative marine fuel infrastructure at major ports, including green methanol bunkering and hydrogen hub projects.

Among key developments, V.O. Chidambaranar Port is advancing a green methanol bunkering facility with a total capacity of 1,500 m3, Sarbananda Sonowal, Minister of Shipping, said in a written statement to the Indian Parliament on Saturday.

It also mentions that Deendayal Port has reached port readiness level 6 for biomethanol bunkering operations.

India is also progressing green hydrogen hubs at Deendayal, Paradip and V.O. Chidambaranar ports, supporting future marine fuel supply chains.

Projects include a 1 MW electrolyser at Deendayal and a planned hydrogen and ammonia handling jetty at Paradip.

The initiatives form part of broader measures to reduce port emissions, including electrification, renewable energy adoption and the rollout of electric tugs under the Green Tug Transition Programme.

India aims to induct 16 electric tugboats by 2027.
