U.S. marine coatings maker Pettit Marine Paint says it has launched a new metal-free antifouling coating, Hydrocoat Eco.

The coating uses a water-based formula with an organic biocide and an anti-slime inhibitor to prevent hull fouling, allowing vessels to maintain fuel efficiency in their operations.

The product follows the company's original water-based coating, Hydrocoat and the follow-up product Hydrocoat SR, which was introduced last year, adding biocide properties to the formula.

Hydrocoat Eco uses the self-polishing, water-based, ablative technology of the existing coatings along with an organic, metal-free biocide, which makes it compatible with almost all bottom paints and substrates, including aluminum and bronze materials.

The Hydrocoat products' water base means they are easier to apply and clean up than coatings using other solvents.

Consulting company Frost & Sullivan predicted last year that the marine coatings industry would hit $10.2 billion in 2018, up from $5 billion in 2011 as ship owners focus on reducing fuel consumption.
