MOL to Test NOx Reducing SCR System
Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL) today announced plans to install and test a Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system for nitrogen oxides (NOx) on all three power generators on one of its oceangoing freighters.
The system was jointly developed by MOL, Yanmar Co., Ltd., and Namura Shipbuilding Co., Ltd., and aims to show NOx denitration under actual operating conditions, to meet International Maritime Organization (IMO) Tier III NOx regulations.
The system, which was also developed with support from ClassNK's "Joint R&D with Industries and Academic Partners" program, received a statement of fact from the classification society on July 1 verifying that it meets the NOx Tier III emission limit.
The test, which is scheduled to last about two years, will ensure that all three SCR systems function properly under normal power generator operating conditions, and that the long-term performance of the system can be maintained even if the engines use Bunker C and other fuels that contain high levels of impurities.
"This initiative reflects MOL's effort to prevent air pollution as one of the environmental strategies in its single-year management plan RISE 2013," MOL's statement read.
GE Marine said last month it has developed a non-SCR emissions reducing system.
