U.S.-based shipbuilder Conrad Industries, Inc. (Conrad) Friday said that it believes that the further development of liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunker market is "of critical importance," and sees the fuel's use as "the next logical progression" for the company's history.

The comments came as part of an announcement that the company has created a business unit to focus on LNG projects.

"We believe the continued development of the LNG fuel market to be of critical importance. Not only will it provide positive change with respect to environmental emissions, but will ultimately provide significant long-term positive economic results for owners and operators," said Johnny Conrad, President & CEO of Conrad.

"We want Conrad to be an active participant and a leader in the development of this market."

The company suggests that it is well positioned to embark upon an LNG-focused business.

"Conrad has the experience, the workforce, the facilities, and the leadership to not only take advantage of these opportunities, but to be actively engaged in fostering the continued development of the infrastructure necessary to expand this markets capabilities."

The company says its new division will be headed by Brett Wolbrink, Conrad's Vice President.

As Ship & Bunker reported in September, Conrad Orange Shipyard, Inc. (Conrad Shipyard), held a keel-laying ceremony for the first LNG bunker barge to be built in the U.S.
