Port of Long Beach Awards $5.4 Million For Air Quality Projects
Port of Long Beach (PoLB) said today it has awarded a total of $5.4 million in funding for 28 projects that will reduce, avoid, or capture emissions of greenhouse gases.
The Long Beach Board of Harbour Commissioners said it awarded the grants to recipients that included Port terminal operators, City of Long Beach departments, and non-profit organisations for both Port and community based initiatives ranging from energy-efficient outdoor lighting to Solar-powered hot water and electricity systems.
"These greenhouse gas reduction grants represent the latest contributions to our community from the Port's innovative and groundbreaking mitigation grants program," said Susan E. Anderson Wise, President of the Long Beach Board of Harbour Commissioners.
"With these projects, the Port is assisting those who are making an investment in sustainability in a variety of exciting ways," she added.
Port of Long Beach said the Grant Programs were established in 2009 to reduce negative health effects of Port-related air pollution and to reduce greenhouse gases.
The $5.4 million represents the third round of grants from the Port's Community Mitigation Grant Programs with $5 million coming from the Middle Harbour redevelopment project and $400,000 from the Gerald Desmond Bridge replacement project.
A total of 83 applications for grants were submitted by the February 2012 deadline, with PoLB saying the 28 projects selected incorporate the best available technologies to cut pollution and provide positive residual benefits including cost savings for energy consumption by the recipients.
A complete list of grant recipients from this round of funding is available on the Port's website.
