State-owned Petroleum Company of Trinidad and Tobago Limited (Petrotrin) Thursday announced it intends to restart bunkering activities at Pointe-a-Pierre, and will acquire a new double-hulled bunker barge to carry out operations at the port.

The company says the move will improve the reliability of Petrotrin’s bunker operations.

The announcement came on the heels of a site visit to Petrotrin's Port and Marine facilities in Pointe-a-Pierre on Wednesday by Petrotrin’s chairman, Professor Andrew Jupiter, the company's Board of Directors, and the company's president, Fitzroy Harewood.

During the visit, Jupiter noted the Board’s commitment to improve infrastructure in order to ensure Petrotrin's safe operations for the both the employees and community in general.

Further, Jupiter highlighted that, during the 2016 year, approximately 81.0 million barrels of oil is expected to pass through the port, including about 34.5 million barrels of imported crude import and 46.5 million barrels of product exports.

"Every barrel of oil that has been refined for export at Pointe-a-Pierre refinery, has found its way through the Port and Marine operations," said Jupiter.

"Moreso, we pride ourselves in the fact that this has to be done in a very safe manner."

Last year, Ship & Bunker reported that Petrotrin said it had fired three employees from its Port and Marine Operations over an incident dating back to 2014, although a workers union claimed the individuals' opposition to the privatisation of bunkering operations was the real reason for their dismissal.
