Sea Star Line, LLC, a subsidiary of TOTE, has finalised plans for a liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunkering system that will be used to supply its new LNG containerships, MarineLink reports.

The process was developed in partnership with U.S. companies Applied Cryo Technologies (ACT) and Dragon Products

Under the new plans, 25 cryogenic IMO tanks are expected to transport LNG from Georgia to Jacksonville, where ACT will then fuel the containership in under six hours.

“With little LNG infrastructure available for the maritime sector, Sea Star Line faced a challenging scenario in finding a solution," said Vice President of Operations Jim Wagstaff.

"ACT is one of the few partners that can meet Sea Star’s expectations in a safe and environmentally friendly manner which are our top priorities."

ACT said that it is expecting construction of the system to start in April 2015, with delivery slated for September 2015.

"Our goal is to raise the bar of what this industry has come to expect from an equipment supplier,” said Jack Smith, COO of ACT.

Once operational, both of TOTE's 3,100-TEU Marlin-class LNG containerships will serve the Puerto Rico market

Earlier this month, it was reported that both ships are slated to launch from General Dynamics NASSCO's San Diego shipyard on April 18, 2015.
