The U.S. Coast Guard says it has released two draft policies on liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunkering.

The documents, which are available for public comment now, provide voluntary guidance for vessels using LNG fuel and for bunkering facilities.

The first letter addresses fuel transfer operations and the training of vessel personnel.

"It recommends transfer and personnel training measures that we believe will achieve a level of safety that is at least equivalent to that provided for traditional fueled vessels," the Coast Guard said.

The second draft policy addresses safety, security, and risk assessment measures for bunkering facilities and vessels.

As LNG bunkering attracts increasing interest globally, a number of separate efforts to provide guidelines on the practice are moving forward, including in Europe and Singapore.

International classification society DNV GL has also issued guidance on the subject.

The Coast Guard guidelines can be downloaded from a government website.
