General Dynamics NASSCO last week said it held a keel laying ceremony for the first of three liquid natural gas (LNG) conversion ready "ECO" tankers being built for SEA-Vista LLC (SEA-Vista), at the company's shipyard in San Diego.

The three 610 foot long tankers will have dual-fuel capable auxiliary engines and the ability to accommodate the future installation of an LNG fuel system.

The 50,000 deadweight ton tankers have a 330,000 barrel cargo capacity and were said to offer improved fuel-efficiency through several features, including an optimized hull form and a G-series MAN ME slow-speed main engine.

"This is another great milestone for the SEACOR ships," said Parker Larson, Director of Commercial Programs at General Dynamics NASSCO.

"These Jones Act ECO-class tankers feature state-of-the-art design technologies and achieve world-leading fuel efficiencies."

The ships were designed by DSEC Co., Ltd. (DSEC), a subsidiary of Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) of Busan, South Korea.

Last month, General Dynamics NASSCO was also involved in the launch of the world's first LNG powered containership.
