Eco Marine Power (EMP) and KEI System Ltd (KEI), both of Japan, will release a new marine computer system that can monitor and control ship equipment, including wind and solar power devices, and monitor fuel use, the companies announced in an emailed press release.

The Aquarius Monitoring and Automation system (Aquarius MAS) is set to launch later this year.

The system is based on the KEI 3240 Data Logger platform for vessels including tug boats, training ships, and bulk ore carriers, but the new version adds features to help verify savings from the use of alternative power.

Data can be saved and analysed to fine-tune ships' operational performance.

"This is an important milestone for our company and means that after years of development work with KEI System we are now bringing solutions to the market that will help make sustainable shipping a reality," said Greg Atkinson of EMP.

After the first installation of the system, in cooperation with AIMS Global Engineering (AIMS) of Malaysia, the companies plan to market it globally and to incorporate it into EMP's Aquarius Eco Ship concept and into the designs of the Tonbo Hybrid Ferry and Medaka Eco Commuter Ferry.

EMP is currently at the prototype lab testing phase of the development of its wind and solar power ship propulsion system, Aquarius MRE, and is working with AIMS on marketing and developing renewable energy solutions for shipping, beginning with the Medaka ferry design.
