The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) Friday announced that the International Bunkering Industry Association (IBIA) will be hosting a gala dinner during the 11th Singapore Maritime Week (SMW), which will bring together "major players from the bunkering and shipping industry in Asia for networking and sharing of views."

The announcement was part of a statement issued by the MPA outlining plans for the SMW, which will be focused on ways that Singapore can uphold its competitive advantage in the current "choppy conditions" of the global shipping industry.

"Given the uncertain market outlook, SMW 2016 will be about sharpening competitiveness in the industry by addressing the economic challenges and identifying unexplored areas for growth," said Andrew Tan, MPA's CEO.

"By creating awareness, building interest in the sector and enhancing understanding vis-a-vis our line-up of events, we hope to foster a stronger, more cohesive maritime community that will weather the headwinds and be well-positioned for growth opportunities that are inevitable when the tide turns."

Aimed at raising public awareness of Maritime Singapore, SMW will include a series of maritime events, including a keynote maritime lecture, high-level forum, disscusions, social events, and public showcases.

Approximately 400 senior global maritime professionals are expected to attend SMW to disscuss and voice their opinions on the future of shipping.

Last week, Ship & Bunker reported that, in light of the current downturn in the shipping industry, the MPA will grant a 10 percent concession on port dues for bulk carriers, effective April 15, 2016.
