Ports of Auckland Limited (Ports of Auckland) announced that Seafuels, their equally shared venture with PB Bunkers BVI Ltd, has signed a 10-year charter agreement with Z Energy for the fuel bunkering vessel Awanuia, PortNews reports.

The long-term partnership between the two local companies is said to provide certainty of fuel supply for ships calling Auckland, and was called "essential" to the continued success and growth of the port.

Awanuia collects marine fuel oils from the Marsden Point Refinery and bunkers vessels in both Auckland and Marsden Point.

"Continuing the long-term charter with Z Energy is good news for the port, their customers and New Zealand," said Wayne Mills, chairman at Seafuels.

"Awanuia is state-of-the-art and the only powered marine fuel oil vessel operating in New Zealand.

"It is a substantial asset for the sea trade in New Zealand."

Mills also acknowledged Seafuels for reaching two years of operation with no lost time injuries incurred.

"Prioritising safety is critical to how we do business," said Mills.

Our staff and the Awanuia crew have worked very hard to achieve this milestone and I would like to congratulate them on their success."

In December, several hundreds of litres of bunkers reportedly spilled from a crude oil tanker calling at  its Marsden Point facility.
