South Korea is making progress with its liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunker infrastructure, according to a new report by Singapore-based consultancy TRI-ZEN International Pte Ltd (TRI-ZEN), which notes that dedicated LNG bunkering services will start in 2017 at Tongyeong.

In South Korea an initial and dedicated truck to ship (TTS) operation was said to already be available in Incheon, but the first open LNG bunkering facility is planned to be constructed in the city of Tongyeong by 2017 as part of the existing public gas terminal.

According to the report, after Tongyeong, the cities of Gwangyang, Boryeong, and Incheon will all add LNG bunkering facilities.

The report also notes that elsewhere in Asia Singapore, the world's biggest bunker port, is also moving on LNG bunkering.

As Ship & Bunker reported last month, Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) has now awarded LNG bunkering licences to Pavilion Gas and a joint bid by Keppel Offshore & Marine Ltd and BG Group, which will aim to supply LNG bunkers in pilot schemes from 2017.

In March of 2014 Ship & Bunker reported that Tri-Zen had calculated the global market for LNG bunkers will be 15 to 20 million tonnes per year within 10 years.
