Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. [TYO:9104] (MOL) says it has received a Sustainability Assessment loan from Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corp (SMBC) in recognition of its environment, social, and corporate governance efforts.

The bank praised the Japanese shipping company for its Senpaku ISHIN project for the design of next-generation vessels, including the Emerald Ace, a car carrier launched last June that uses a hybrid battery system and solar power, and two new vessels featuring high-efficiency waste heat energy recovery systems.

The company also won kudos for its participation in an anti-piracy effort in Somalia and a CSR management plan to improve its services.

Last year, MOL said it has been increasing its use of slow steaming, which it said reduces its fuel usage, drops emissions levels, and saves money.
