ExxonMobil Corp. has begun producing ultra-low sulfur diesel (ULSD) in Singapore, Reuters reports.

With the commissioning of the refinery's new hydrotreater, the facility begins producing 57,000 barrels per day (bpd) of ULSD, along with 100,000 bpd of low-sulfur diesel.

Overall, the refinery has a capacity of 592,000 bpd.

ULSD, used in vehicles, equipment, and marine vessels, is growing in popularity in Asia as nations try to control emissions.

ExxonMobil also has diesel hydrotreaters in operation at two U.S. refineries and in Antwerp, Belgium; Sriracha, Thailand; and Yanbu, Saudi Arabia.

The company says it has spent more than $3 billion on expanding production of ULSD.

As demand for low-sulfur bunkers rise, companies including the Petroleum Company of Trinidad and Tobago Ltd. (Petrotrin) and Russian energy major OAO Lukoil (Lukoil) have also announced plans to produce more ULSD.
