A strong start to the year for bunker sales in Singapore continued in May, according to the latest preliminary data from the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA), which shows sales for all products rose to a 13-month high of 3,707,200 metric tonnes (mt), a gain of 1.13 percent month-on-month and 1.91 percent year-on-year.

Last month Singapore followed up on its highest ever first quarter bunker sales total with a record total for the first four months of a year, but for May the port fell just short of continuing the feat.

Total year-to-date sales in the world's biggest bunkering port by volume now stand at 18,026,700 mt, 64,400 mt shy of the current record for the period of 18,091,100 mt set in 2012.

Other than hitting the 13-month high, it was business as usual during May with sales of 2,803,900 mt of IFO380 making up a little over 75 percent of the overall total, while sales of 500 cSt product dipped slightly month-on-month to 704,900 mt, or 19 percent of the overall total.

May also saw the port receive 3,497 calls for bunkers, the highest since at least the start of 2011.

Earlier this month Ship & Bunker reported that Singapore witnessed unprecedented volumes of fuel oil trading.
