Classification society American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) and the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) will work together to promote research and development of alternative fuels and next-generation port systems, ABS said.

The two parties signed a five-year memorandum of understanding (MOU) that includes research into liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunkering, promotion of maritime technology in Singapore, and work on port systems involving safety and security, traffic management, and navigation.

"This MOU is a further sign of our commitment to work with all stakeholders in this growing hub of global trade to further R&D efforts that provide practical solutions to today's most pressing challenges," said ABS Chairman and CEO Christopher J. Wiernicki.

MPA Chief Executive Andrew Tan said the port authority works with various classification societies on research.

"This MOU with ABS will strengthen Maritime Singapore's R&D capabilities in the areas of green shipping, future port and maritime technologies," he said.

"It also aims to promote Singapore's position as a global maritime knowledge hub."

The agreement builds on a S$12.5 million ($10.1 million) Maritime Technology Professorship at the Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) that the MPA and ABS helped launch last year.
