The Finnish Ministry of Transport and Communications says it is providing €4.5 million ($6 million) to Finnlines Oyj, Viking Line Abp, and NLC Ferry Ab Oy (Wasaline) to pay for environmental systems.

The environmental aid will cover scrubbers and the modification of fuel systems to help ships meet new emissions rules.

The allocations are part of the third round of funding for such projects, and four shipping companies applied for funding for 10 vessels in this round alone, but Finland provided only €4.5 million because some of the applications were for costs that were not eligible for the funding.

In 2012 Finland's Minister of Transport Merja Kyllönen said funding to support environmentally friendly vessels was "vital."
