A Spanish cargo ship has split in half off Bayonne, France, leaking fuel oil, BBC News reports.

The Luno crashed into the breakwater at Anglet after an engine failure, breaking in two, with one half of the ship on each side.

The 12 crew members were winched from the wreck by helicopter, and one suffered a nose injury.

A diesel leak has been spotted in the area, and air around the wreck smells of fuel oil, according to a Euronews report.

Authorities have begun steps to deal with the spill.

The Luno is a general cargo ship owned and managed by Spanish company Naviera Murueta, according to vessel tracking site ShipSpotting.

The vessel generally carries fertiliser but was empty when the accident occurred, according to the news reports.
