ABS Thursday announced that it has become the first class society to earn European Union (EU) Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (MRV) accreditation after Greece's national accreditation body, the Hellenic Accreditation System (ESYD) awarded the company approval to perform assessments for EU MRV compliance.

"We are proud to be the first class society accredited to perform EU MRV assessments," said Christopher J. Wiernicki, ABS Chairman, President and CEO.

"Endorsement by Greece's National Accreditation Body acknowledges our leadership role in helping industry navigate complex operational and environmental regulatory challenges."

As Ship & Bunker has reported, the MRV regulation will require shipping companies to submit ship-specific monitoring plans to verifiers for approval by the end of the August 2017, with per-voyage monitoring set to start on January 1, 2018.

As an independent third party, ABS says it supports EU MRV compliance by ensuring plans are aligned with the applicable requirements, and that emissions reporting is prepared in accordance with the accepted monitoring plan.

Further, ABS explains that it uses its Nautical Systems (NS) fleet management software to enable MRV compliance through the NS Voyage Performance Manager module, noting that data is automatically captured through the NS Autologger and noon reports.

"With multiple ways to meet EU MRV requirements, owners look for a trusted advisor like ABS to evaluate the options," said Kirsi Tikka, ABS Executive Vice President for Global Marine.

"As the first accredited class society, ABS is already working with owners and operators to help them verify that their monitoring plans are in compliance with the requirements. This recognition by the ESYD further demonstrates our leading role in providing EU MRV compliance solutions."
