Roughly 120 kilos of bunker fuel has been recovered on the Spanish coast after a Russian fishing trawler sank nearby earlier this month, Reuters reports

The fuel has reportedly been washing up onto beaches at Veneguera, Tasarte and Taurito, with the situation expects to worsen over the next few days, according to environmental group Greenpeace.

The Oleg Naydenov had reportedly been carrying 1,409 tonnes of fuel when it caught fire and sank 15 nautical miles south of Gran Canaria.

The ship is still leaking 5-10 litres of fuel into the water per hour, according to the Spanish government.

Robot submarines sent by the country's Public Works Ministry have reportedly also been sent down to assess whether the three known leaks on the hull can be sealed.

It was reported earlier that various environmental groups have been worried that the spill will affect the area's deep sea coral and population of bottle nosed dolphins.

Weekend reports from World Wildlife Fund (WWF) activists said fuel oil from the spill is now heading towards beaches on the island of Tenerife.
