Wärtsilä Corporation says it has signed a five-year agreement with Viking Line to maintain the largest ever liquefied natural gas (LNG)-powered passenger ferry, Viking Grace.

Under the contract, Wärtsilä will handle maintenance planning and work, conditional monitoring, spare parts supply, technical support, and workshop services for the ferry's four Wärtsilä 50DF dual-fuel main engines and the LNGPac gas system's safety valves.

"The maintenance agreement provides predictability in maintenance issues, and through extending maintenance intervals, we can lower operating costs and optimize the lifecycle efficiency of Viking Grace," said Tony Öhman, senior vice president of Marine Operations & Newbuilding at Viking Line Abp.

The Viking Grace, built by STX Finland Oy's Turku shipyard, operates between Finland and Sweden.

STX Europe has called the vessel "most environmentally friendly large cruise vessel ever built."
