Renewable energy systems company Eco Marine Power (EMP) says it has installed a fuel-saving management and automation system integrated with a solar panel array on a Greek ferry.

The installation on the Blue Star Delos, owned and operated by Attica Group subsidiary Blue Star Ferries, represents the first commercial use of the Aquarius MAS system.

The MAS system will monitor the performance of the solar panels and a battery pack, display fuel consumption of the main engines in real time, and calculate emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2), nitrogen oxides (NOx), and sulfur oxides (SOx).

"Blue Star Ferries and the Attica Group are committed to implementing solutions that reduce vessel emissions, improve fuel efficiency and continue our tradition of embracing innovative technologies," said Myron Vergis, manager of the Electrical and Electronic Department for Attica Group.

"I look forward to working further with Eco Marine Power on the Blue Start Renewable Energy Innovation Project and introducing more renewable energy solutions to the shipping market."

EMP Chief Technology Officer Greg Atkinson said the installation demonstrates the value of solar power combined with data systems for commercial applications.

"Not only will the system allow Blue Star Ferries monitor their fuel use and emissions but it will also help the company reduce fuel consumption by tapping into the limitless and clean power provided by the sun," he said.

EMP announced plans for the installation in August, saying the project would be the first application of a number of new technologies the company has developed.
