Wärtsilä says Norwegian cruise and ferry operator Color Line has hired it to retrofit four scrubber systems for its SuperSpeed 2 Ro-pax ferry.

The installation, to be undertaken during docking of the vessel in spring 2014, will include four open loop scrubber systems.

Color Line also plans to install the emissions reducing systems on three other vessels.

"We take environmental issues seriously," said Jan-Helge Pile, senior vice president of marine operations at Color Line.

"Since 2009, all Color Line ships have maintained an environmental balance sheet that details emissions to air, and discharges to water and harbours.

"We believe that the Wärtsilä exhaust gas cleaning systems will significantly enhance our efforts in striving for sustainable operations."

The scrubber system uses sea water in three stages, allowing SOx to react with the alkaline water to form sulfuric acid without the use of added chemicals.

The used water is monitored as it is discharged to ensure compliance with all requirements.

A recent report found that ships are a fast-growing market for scrubbers as new regulations governing emissions come into force.
