Reduction of sulfur emissions from ships represents one of the biggest short-term markets for scrubbers and related technology, according to a new report from the McIlvaine Company.

The report predicts that many vessels using high sulfur bunker fuel will choose scrubber systems to capture pollution in response to new emission regulations.

The entire market for scrubbers, absorbers, adsorbers and biofilters across all industries will generate revenues of $7.5 billion in 2017, it found, with incinerators representing $1.7 billion and wastewater making up $1.3 billion.

Maritime classification services firm ABS recently released an advisory on exhaust gas scrubber systems, arguing that fuel switching will not be a viable option in the future so ship owners must choose among alternative fuels, higher-priced low-sulfur fuel oil, and scrubbers as they work to meet new emissions limits.
