Cruise ships calling at the Port of Hamburg will be able to get electrical power from a barge using liquefied natural gas (LNG) starting next year, industry news site The Motorship reports.

Becker Marine Systems subsidiary Hybrid Port Energy of Hamburg has awarded a building contract for the LNG Hybrid Barge to Shipbuilding and Machinery of Komárno, Slovakia.

The barge will use Caterpillar-based, LNG-fuelled gensets from Zeppelin Power Systems, the first marine classified LNG Caterpillar engines to be delivered to customers.

The project, which began in 2012, is scheduled for completion by the summer of 2014.

The barge will allow Hamburg to become the first port in Europe to provide cold ironing power to cruise ships.

In addition to electricity, the 74-meter-long barge will also be able to supply combined heat and power.

The European Sea Ports Organisation (ESPO) recently said a European Union (EU) plan to require ports to provide cold ironing might not be appropriate in all cases.
