Greece-based Helengi Engineering, at Posidonia 2016 international shipping exhibition in Athens, has unveiled a liquefied natural gas (LNG) feeder and bunkering vessel, Amaltheia, which the company designed in partnership with NAP Engineering.

The vessel is said to be intended to provide LNG bunkering services in the Port of Piraeus, as well acting as a feeder vessel to supply LNG to other ports, including Patras and Heraklion.

"This is the result of years of intensive engineering studies and it is the first time that Greek companies undertake such a demanding and complex design on this special type of vessel," said Helengi Engineering, noting that it intends to design more LNG vessels with various capacities.

While Amaltheia has a 1,400 cubic metre (cbm) capacity, Helengi Engineering says the vessel design can also be reworked to accommodate up to 2,000 cbm if required.

Helengi Engineering's Amaltheia is not the only novel LNG bunkering vessel to have come to media attention of late.

Angus Campbell, managing director of Bernhard Schulte Shipmanagement (BSM), last month discussed the design of a multi-purpose LNG bunkering vessel, which it is envisaged will not only provide LNG bunkers to ships, but will also operate as a cold ironing barge to provide at-berth power to other ships
