Canada-based Corvus Energy Thursday acknowledged the recent christening of Scandlines' newest hybrid ferry, the M/V Berlin, signalling another bunker saving hybrid vessel is ready to join the world fleet.

The low emission, diesel electric hybrid propulsion system is powered by Corvus Energy's ESS (Energy Storage System) - the fifth Scandlines hybrid ferry to do so.

"Scandlines has gone to great lengths to ensure the M/V Berlin is environmentally friendly by utilizing technologies that increase fuel savings," said Corvus.

Other energy-saving solutions including LED lighting throughout and variable-frequency control.

"When consumption is lower, excess energy is stored in the Corvus ESS. This energy is then released when consumption is higher than generator production," Corvus explained.

"On the emissions front, the M/V Berlin has four scrubbers which remove harmful substances from the exhaust gases such as SOx and fine particles. Beyond the hybrid propulsion system, the vessel has also been designed for efficiency, with a hull that is optimized for the sea depths between Rostock and Gedser using advanced CFD (computational fluid dynamics) calculations."

Earlier this year Corvus announced a new multi-year agreement with Korea's LG Chem Ltd. (LG Chem) that will see the Seoul-headquartered company provide lithium-ion pouch cells for Corvus' next generation maritime ESS.
