Finnish company Valmet Monday announced it will supply exhaust gas scrubber systems (EGCS) for two new cruise vessels, Mein Schiff 7 and Mein Schiff 8.

The vessels will be built by Meyer Turku for TUI Cruises GmbH (TUI  Cruises), a Germany-based, joint venture cruise line operated by German tourist firm, TUI AG and the American cruise line operator, Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd.

"We are proud to continue the supply of our technology to the TUIC fleet. Our scrubber system will ensure for the ships a modern, reliable exhaust gas cleaning system," said Anssi Mäkelä, Senior Manager, Marine Scrubber Systems, Valmet.

For TUI Cruises the new cruise ships represent the fifth and sixth cruise vessels with EGCS scrubbers based on Valmet's technology.

Valmet did not disclose the value of the order, but said "typical" orders are valued between €1 and €6 million ($1.1 to $6.6 million).

The scrubber system will include an "integrated hybrid scrubber system" for both engine rooms, and scrub emissions using seawater when in "open loop mode" and recirculated water and alkali in "closed loop mode."

Wash water was said to be cleaned with Valmet's patented water treatment system; the exhaust gas scrubber system are controlled with Valmet's marine automation system.

The scrubber system will be delivered to the first vessel in the fourth quarter of 2016 and to the second vessel in the first quarter of 2017.

Valmart also does business in the biofuel sector. In August of 2014 Ship & Bunker mentioned the company's efforts to develop pyrolysis oil (biocrude) in a feature discussing products related to environmental sustainability.
