Gazprom Group company Gazprom Germaina will work with the operator of the port of Rostock on the Baltic Sea to develop liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunkering and truck fuelling facilities, news site LNG Industry reports.

The company signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Hafen-Entwicklungs-gesellschaft Rostock mbH that includes development, marketing, and usage of LNG.

"We look forward to working with Gazprom," said Ulrich Bauermeister, managing director of Hafen-Entwicklungsgesellschaft Rostock.

"LNG has the best environment and safety balance of all the fuels used to power ships, and that allows shippers to meet the high environmental protection requirements."

Rostock is the largest German multi-purpose Baltic Sea port, and the project will provide new access to LNG fuel in Germany.

The plan calls for the LNG to be shipped from a planned liquefaction plant in the Gulf of Finland.

Gazprom Group announced plans for the development of the LNG plant last year.

The company has said LNG bunkering is an important part of its efforts to expand its LNG operations.
